It's been a week since we've started weaning Matthew off the bottle.
He's been doing so well! (knock on wood)
He use to get 4-5 bottles a day. Now we're down to 2! He gets one when he first gets up in the morning (around 6-7 AM) and one at night when he goes down (around 9:00 PM).
At first it was hard (probably harder for me than for him!). When it was time to go down for his morning nap, we would give him a sippy cup with milk in it. He would take a sip and push it away. But we kept at it and he would take a few sips and push it away. He would just cry for a little, then would stop or fall asleep. We would repeat the cycle for his afternoon nap too.
We've come to realize that he likes to drink his milk through a straw! So, when we were in Chicago, I bought Matthew the little cup in the picture above. It has a little swirly straw inside of it. I started filling that up with milk and he loves drinking his milk out of that. He'll drink juice/water out of his sippy cups, but not his milk. Silly boy.
We're still working on him drinking his milk out of a sippy cup, but I think we've made great progress for the first week! Slowly we will eliminate the morning bottle and hopefully the night time bottle too. (That may be harder for me because then it'll mean my baby's not a baby anymore!)

Go, Matthew, go! He is getting cuter everyday!
What a great job little boy! Julian liked the cups with straws as well when we started doing cups :) We never had to wean him off bottles since he hated them anyway and only drank out of them when I wasn't home... but quitting nursing after the 1 year mark was definitely hard!
Sounds like you're all doing a pretty good job with it. I love the straw cup.
yay for all the progress. he is a pro with that straw. hoping this transition all goes smoothly ;)

Well done both of you! I don't know why but we have not looked into it at all, Oliver has two bottles at home, morning and night time, plus one in the crèche around 4pm, I may check with them if it's worth removing that one. At weekends we skip the afternoon bottle in favour of a more solid snack (fruit, yogurt, home made muffin etc), but perhaps we should try and do the same for breakfast too?
Thank you so much for your sweet comment on my blog and for your prayers. I'm going to have to read through your blog and store all the information on what to expect and raising a baby!! This is a first for both me and my husband and something we completely thought was outside of our lives together :)
It was VERY hard on me to get rid of bottles for A. I missed my cuddle time.
Matthew is doing great! I love the cup.
good luck! He is soo cute!
He's such a big boy with his straw cup! Nice job - both of you!
I feel so glad to know that I am not the only one who has not weaned their child RIGHT at the year mark.
Although my son, Cedric, is breastfed, weaning has been a rollarcoaster. Somedays he doesnt seem to notice that it is gone, and others! OH BOY!
I read to my son too! I think its great that you read to your lil one!
oooOOOooo also Ceddy LOVES straws! :P good choice on the cool cup!
