Matthew started solids last week. We started out with Carrots and he seemed to enjoy them.
We would put it in his mouth, he would push it out with his tongue and we would push it back in, then he would swallow the baby food and open up for more. I think he was adjusting to the texture. He ate about half the Gerber container.
It's fun and exciting to see him enter this next phase of eating. I tried to feed him rice porridge yesterday, but he didn't seem to like that as much. He just kept pushing it back out. I'm tempted to add a little soy sauce to add flavor (but I won't). I know he's still too young right now so I'll stick with the gerber stuff.
We nornally feed him solids once a day, at dinner time, when we're eating. Steve is pretty adamant about ONLY feeding him vegetables for now because he heard from someone that if we start feeding him fruits, Matthew won't go back to eating vegetables because he'll prefer the sweetness over the veggies.
Any advice/inputs?
And the other thing we've learned is that we need to strip him down only to his diaper when it's feeding time. He likes to stick his hands in his mouth when we're feeding him and then rubs it all over his face/hair with it. It gets quite messy!

I've heard rumors like what your husband is talking about, though both Jaden and Sienna started out with fruits and they've always eaten plenty of veggies!
Bristol started out w/ rice cereal a couple weeks ago and we're waiting a bit to add fruits / veggies. Mostly I'm just waiting now while I figure out if I'm going to attempt to make my own babyfood for the first time....I've heard how easy it is, but I'm not sure I have it in me!
Kaylee does the same thing with putting her fingers in her mouth when eating. I don't know how much towels or tissues I use each time when feeding her.
I havent introduce her to veggies yet just the rice cereal. Have he tried that? Kaylee loves it. We bought a food processor so were going to puree the veggies first before fruits.
Ha, ha, ha...so cute to see how much Mathew is enjoying his carrot time. I gave Ethan oatmeal (mixed with his veggies) vs. rice cereal. I also started with green veggies and gave carrots & squash as "desert". I would not be very Asian if I did not make "rice porridge" mixed with chicken (or any other meat product)and spinach, broccoli or any veggies...blend to baby food consistency. Enjoy!
De-lurking. I know that it seems like a good idea to strip the baby when he eats, but just know that he will get conditioned to that. I know some kids who will now (as toddlers) only eat naked. When they are away from home (birthday party, restaurants, etc), they immediately start getting undressed when food comes. I always just used bigger bibs, and did pretty good keeping clothes clean. If i was really concerned about the mess, I would put an old t-shirt on with the bib for extra protection. Us a stain stick on the bibs, and they should be ok. You can also get vinyl bibs that just wipe off if you are concerned with stains. Also, I always introduced all the veggies first, then added fruits, so my baby got BOTH in a day. They didn't start turning their noses up at veggies until they were eating solid foods! Good Luck!
Such cute pictures!! LD loves fruits and veggies equally. We gave him both from the beginning. I still give him both at each meal. We never did rice cereal, new research I read didn't show it was beneficial. After a few weeks of fruits and veggies we added meat. Good luck!! It can get quite messy. We do the strip down to the diaper thing at home too, out at restaurants its anything goes though. I used www.wholesomebabyfood.com to get ideas and info about foods, its a great resource. But from 6 months on you can feed them whatever you eat really. Cut up small enough of course.

Oh the CUTE! He is just so adorable.
I'm pretty sure he gets cuter and cuter every day doesn't he. :)
Adding solids is such a fun time. I love the expressions they make every time they try something new.
My husband was like Steve on the all veggie no fruit front. I gave in for a few weeks, and then I stared adding fruits. Honestly, I think you only care in the beginning. As they get old, you get more and more lax about what they eat. It's nice. :)
No advice but love the mess!
Our pediatrician recommended starting with vegetables first so that's what we did. We worked through all the vegetables first before moving onto fruits, but we were also checking for any food allergies so didn't want to have too many different foods in the mix. Once we knew what foods were ok (he was very sensitive to fruits like pineapple and apricots - would get a horrible bleeding diaper rash), we would do fruit in the morning and vegetables at night. He did great with going back and forth and even now at 2 1/2 loves fruits and vegetables.
Two Things! First, I mixed the rice, oatmeal or mixed grains with whatever I was feeding Ash. Without mixing something it basically tastes like wallpaper paste and I didn't blame her for not eating it. Second, I did the same veggies only thing. Didn't work. She just likes fruit better. I make my own baby food however so I am usually mixing fruit and veggies together and disguising the "evil enemy of veggies". Gerber vs homemade or other brands makes a huge difference in diapers also!! Gerber makes stinkies, SUPER STINKY!
Took my blog down a while ago but have still been following you. So happy that Matthew is doing well. You guys look great! My email if you need it is meadkacy@hotmail.com.
Oh how fun! Love the pics of all the messiness...
Well done on moving on to solids! I didn't really have a problem with Oliver between fruit and veg, and actually carrot are quite sweet also. You can try sweet potato, apples and pears, banana of course and then mix with baby rice. I actually love feeding him, but I have noticed that he doesn't quite like his milk much anymore.
Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog! :) I would love to send you some Shaklee to try out! :) Your baby is so sweet! :) Erin
