18w6d - Gestational Diabetes

So, do I actually have Gestational Diabetes??  That was my question to the Endorinologist.
He said I have everything working against me (weight, PCOS, etc) and it will only get worst as the pregnancy continues.  He wants me to monitor my sugar levels for the next two weeks and return to see him.

I have to prick my finger four times a day (once in the morning when I get up, and one hour after every meal). I also have to test my urine every morning for ketones (they are produced in the body when fats, rather than glucose are used to produce energy.  It is harmful to the body if ketones are allowed to accumulate).  So far my numbers have been good so I am hoping to maintain it.  I really have been watching what I eat and have cut out all the sweets.  That's been hard, especially since I have such a sweet tooth and all those jars of apple pie we just canned!  But I have to do what's best for the baby.

I have to go to a two hour Gestational Diabetes class next week and meet with the nutrionist.  I also have an appt with the high risk dr for our 20 wk scan (even though I'll only be a little over 19 wks).  I can't wait to see how much baby has grown!  I can't feel him move yet, but we were listening to his heart beat at home with our little doppler and all of a sudden we could hear him kick the doppler.  It was very cute!

Hope you all enjoy your weekend!

Hey Hannah! I know how difficult it is to have to watch what you eat, but just hang in there! In no time, you'll be holding your bundle of joy and all this diabetes thing will be just a speed bump:~) Enjoy your weekend!

I'm sure you'll be able to keep ahead of the gestational diabetes with a very careful diet. In my niece's experience, it's not just sweets, but rice, potatoes, bread, cereals that have to be limited because of their high carbohydrate content. But it seemed very doable. I wish you the best.

How fun and exciting and wonderful it is to hear that little heartbeat!

Bummer about the diabetes, but thankfully it's only gestational! :0) That's tough too with the holidays coming!

Sounds like you've got a good handle on it though and they'll give you a lot of information to help you through.

How exciting you get to hear the heartbeat!! Isn't it amazing!?!

Hope this doesn't cause you too much stress! It is really hard to change eating habits, but it seems to be a bit easier when there's a baby for motivation!

Good luck! Hopefully with eating right, you can control your levels and not have to have insulin. The key to eating for me was balancing my meals. When I started a meal with a salad and made sure I had a good amount of protein, I could eat bread/pasta/potatos and my sugar would be alright. It's a pain, but it's sooo worth it!

So sorry that you have to deal with this, but I am sure that it will ALL be worth it! Thinking about you.

What a bummer...Pregnancy is supposed to be the one time when we can eat a little more right....and you are such a good baker...so double bummer...

But in the end of course all this watching and monitoring will mean a healthy little one:)

You have my complete sympathies. Been there. Done that. Know exactly what you're going through. Right down to the class. I think I learned that the best place to prick your fingers is on the sides. That way you can get the same finger twice in one day if you have to and it won't hurt as much. The diet isn't bad, and you don't have to cut out all sugar, just most of it. The hardest part is remembering to get your snacks in.

GD does NOT rule.

Oh, I hope the GD isn't a problem for you! I've been so busy in real life that I haven't been on the blogs in too long. I didn't know you're having a boy too, how fun! Listening to the doppler at home is a great idea, I wonder if anyone around me has one I can borrow.
