Helping the people in Haiti

There are many organizations out there who are helping the people in Haiti.  Our church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) has a humanitarian program that helps out world wide. I am so grateful to be part of a church that not only shares the gospel all over the world, but also has a humanitarian program to help out in times of need.  We will be making a contribution to this humanitarian program to assist in the efforts.

Here's a snippet from the church news:

"All of the Church’s meetinghouses in Haiti have been left largely undamaged. Local Church leaders report that nine chapels in Haiti have been used to shelter as many as 5,000 people in local communities where the chapels are located. Several truckloads of food and other relief supplies have been shipped to the chapels, and doctors sent by the Church have provided treatment to injured individuals who are taking shelter there.

Among the millions of people affected by the earthquake in Haiti are thousands of Latter-day Saints. As reported last week on Newsroom.lds.org, all Latter-day Saint missionaries in Haiti are accounted for and safe. They are now participating in the relief efforts and have been helping unload relief supplies at the Church’s meetinghouses. At this point, 20 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have died as a result of the quake, and hundreds more have injuries."

The following article comes from Meridian Magazine.  I've copied and pasted the article to share with everyone.  It's a very touching story.

Boy Sings Primary Songs until Rescued in Haiti

by Jennifer Samuels

Five-year-old Gancci Saintelus jumped up and down with excitement when his mother, Soline, three-year-old sister, Angie, and one-year-old brother, Gansly, walked into his hospital room at the Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami, Florida, on Thursday, January 21st. During the reunion, Soline cried and held her son, while Angie asked where her brother’s arm was. The family was separated seven days ago when Gancci and his dad, Olgan, left their devastated country of Haiti behind to save Gancci’s life. The Saintelus family reunion was heartwarming and their story is quite miraculous.

When the earthquake struck Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, Olgan was working at the Holiday Inn and Soline was at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Centrale chapel meeting with the bishop about a new church calling. Both parents were unharmed and went to check on their three children at home who where staying with a caretaker. They found their three-story apartment complex had collapsed.

“We thought our children had died,” remembered Olgan. “I kept praying to Heavenly Father to help us find our children.”

It took ten hours to dig their children out of the rubble. Their oldest son, Gancci, was singing primary songs that could be heard by rescue workers trying to dig him out. The Saintelus children and caretaker were the only survivors found in the collapsed building.

Gancci had the most serious injuries and needed medical attention right away. Olgan left his wife and two children at the church building and went searching for help for his son.

“I went to the hospital but they told me to wait outside,” Olgan recalled. “Many people were waiting to be helped.”

Olgan decided to take his son to his workplace at the Holiday Inn. He pleaded with people he met in the hallways of the hotel to help him.

“I kept praying for someone to help my son,” Olgan said.

After another twelve hours passed by, he met Mark Eisaman, a former EMT from South Florida who had come on his own to Haiti to help. Eisaman enlisted the help from a British search and rescue team and got Olgan and Gancci on a flight to Miami.

In Miami, Gancci’s right arm had to be amputated, but his life was saved. Eisaman stayed by Olgan’s side and once Gancci started to recover, Eisaman made it his mission to go back and get the rest of the Saintelus family out of Haiti. He said he didn’t want the family to be separated after this disaster.

“I went in there [Haiti] and got the family out,” said Eisaman, who didn’t want to disclose details about the trip.

The Saintelus family reunion was joyful despite all they had been through. They are worried about their extended family and friends in Haiti but believe their faith will help them endure. Church members of their new ward and stake in Miami have come by to welcome them and have brought in clothes, food, toys, diapers and other needed supplies to the family who are staying temporarily in a facility close to the hospital.

“I’m so grateful to my church,” said Olgan with tears in his eyes.

Olgan and Soline have been LDS members for over 10 years now. They both have served missions in Haiti and are temple workers. Although they can’t predict what the future will bring, they are happy that their family is together alive and safe.

Transferred Delayed

My RE called this morning to give us the status on the embryos and we had two that were around 5cell, one at 4, 3, and 2.  They like to see them around 6-8 cell.  He said not to worry because our transfer time wasn't until the late afternoon so they still have time to grow.

Our transfer is done at the main office (not the one that we normally go to for our US/BW) so we never know which RE will be there.  Fortunately, our RE happened to be at the main office today and I'm so glad he was.

I was sitting in the procedure room, undressed from the waist down with a full bladder,  waiting for my RE.    He came in and gave us an update on the embryos and had us sign last minute paper work.  Then he left and came back in five minutes later.  He went to check with the embryologist one more time.  He came back and said that the cells had grown, but it kind of grew pretty fast.  So now he wants us to wait until Wednesday to do a day 5 transfer!  He said we could do a transfer today if we really wanted to, but he recommend we wait because then they will have a better picture of the best embryos.

Steve and I both felt like it was good to wait.  So we will continue to pray that the embryos will continue to grow.  We will be back on Wednesday for day 5 transfer!

P.S. Check back tomorrow for my first Giveaway!

Day Three Transfer Scheduled

We are scheduled to go in tomorrow afternoon for our day 3 transfer.  We have 5 embryos.  (Correction to yesterday's post, we had 8 fertilized, not 9)  The RE will only transfer two though, due to our age.

I'm still sore from the egg retrieval.  I just feel bloated and a little crampy.  I don't remember feeling this way last cycle. It's been nice not to have shots!  Although the progesterone inserts are yucky.

I have been praying so hard the last few days.  It was nice to go to the temple on Friday before the egg retrieval.  I continue to pray for these embryos and hope that this cycle will be a success.  Thank you so much for all your kind words and prayers.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers.  After our transfer tomorrow, I will be on couch rest for the next three days.  This is what I did last time I was on couch rest.  I'll probably end up doing more of the same.

My Julie and Julia Moment

Those of you who have seen the movie will know exactly what I'm talking about.

(Here's the condensed version)

My Sister: Hey, can you meet us at the mall for lunch?
Me: No, I have too much work to do since I'm off tomorrow for my egg retrieval.
My Sister: Guess what?
Me: What?
My Sister: We're having another boy. (Not said with the most excitement)
Me: No! (More in the line of Oh No, you Did'int!!)
My Sister: Yep, the dr. says I'm 16 weeks along, but I don't think he's right. (She thinks she's only 13 wks).
Me: So how do you guys feel about it?
My sister: We're not really ready for it.  Christopher is in the terrible two's and I still can't handle all three kids.

Yep, you read that correctly.  My sister is expecting #4.  She is due in July.  This will make four babies under five years old!

At that moment when she announced her big news to me, in her non thrilled tone, I had flashbacks to the exact moment in the movie when Julia got the letter from her sister.  I felt sad, joy, despair, excitement and resentment, all in one.

My sister and I are like day and night.  She is only a few years older than I am.  Obviously she inherited the fertile gene.  All I ever wanted (and still want) is to be a mom.  My sister has the privileage of being a stay at home mom, but she does not find joy in it!  I know, ya'll probably think she's crazy and you would switch places with her in a hear beat.  But rest assure, she has her own trials.

And that is the reality of it.  While life seems so unfair on the outside, we are all given our own set of trials to overcome.  My reality is to overcome infertility (and I hope to beat it soon!) and rely on my faith to get through it.  My sister's reality is to overcome her own personal trials and to give of herself selflessly (which she struggles with).

I could go on and on about my sister, but I won't.  It's like Julia said, I'm really happy for my sister, I really am.  The Lord chose her to bring life into this world.  I will pray that she continues to delivery happy and healthy babies, but most importantly, that she may overcome her own personal trials.

Trigger Happy!

We are triggering tomorrow at 6:15 AM!

We have to be at the RE's office at 4:45 PM on Friday afternoon.

We are planning to go to the temple right before our retrieval since it's close to the office where the procedure is being done.  I can't wait to go to the temple.  I have been praying and asking the Lord to comfort us and help us to feel His love in our hearts as we go through this whole process.  And to be honest, I just don't know what to feel anymore.  Maybe it's because this is our second IVF, but I feel like we're just going through the motions.  I have no doubt at all that the Lord is and will be with us.  We have seen His hand in so many aspects of our lives.  I just want to really feel that warm, burning feeling that this time it's going to work out.  But I guess sometimes we just have to rely on pure faith to get us through.

And that's what I will do.  Turn it over to the Lord and put my faith in Him and His will.

One big 'ol Follie!

Long weekends are suppose to be for sleeping in.  We spent ours getting up super early to make it to US/BW appointments.  This morning was a little challenging to get out of my warm bed to get ready for work, but of course, we had to go in for another US/BW first. (It doesn't help either when we stay up late to watch 24.  Love Jack.Bauer!).

Looks like all my good follies are on the Left side.  We had one follie that is leading the pack, but has now over matured at 25 mm!!  So that one is a bust.  The other ones may be ready to trigger in a day or two. Back in tomorrow morning to see how much they are growing.

Work bag, NOT a Diaper Bag

I dragged Steve and Abbey to the COACH outlet today.  For a while now I've been searching for a COACH work bag that would fit my laptop.  And the only thing that I've seen that are big enough are the diaper bags!  I've been checking back frequently and still nothing big enough.  So when I was in the store today, I just decided to get the diaper bag!  From the outside, you can't tell it's a diaper bag, but on the inside, there are lots of small pockets and even a baby changing pad!!

In my crazy head, I didn't want to jinx my IVF cycle by purchasing a diaper bag!  I know, crazy thinking.  I just have to keep reminding myself that this is a WORK bag and NOT a DIAPER bag!

Yesterday at our US/BW appointment, our follies looked good and the estrogen level went up a bit so the RE wanted us back today.  I have one follie that is around 15mm, the others are a little behind the big one.  We start the Gani.relex tonight and increase our Menopur dosage (Bra.velle stayed at the same dosage).  Back on Monday for US/BW.  (Maybe ER by the end of the week??)

When Your Husband Makes You Cry...

then tries to make up for it with this...

Let me explain...

Tuesday night when Steve had to give me my nightly dosage of bra.velle and me.nopur, he decided that he would add more of the water solution to the mixture to see if that would lessen the burn.  I thought it would dilute the medicine, but he assures me it doesn't.  Anyways, I have my nightly tantrum of 'wait, I'm not ready yet' and finally I grab a pillow and hold on to dear life and gave him the green light to proceed.

I feel the little prick of the needle entering my belly, then I feel the medicine BURNING like crazy as it goes in.  It felt like it took forever for the medicine to go in (probably because of the extra water).  I start screaming and then the tears start flowing, and I start bawling into my pillow. (Maybe it was the hormones or maybe I'm just a big baby).

Meanwhile, Steve is there gently keeping pressure on the injection area. When I remove the pillow and look at him, he's sitting there smiling, trying to hold his LAUGHTER in!  Can you believe that?!  I wanted to punch him.  He kept saying he was sorry (with a grin on his face).

I don't know if it was the extra water or the area in which he injected me (under the belly button), but I told him that he is not allowed to add any additional water AND he's not allowed to inject me in that area anymore.

The US/BW yesterday was fine.  They were able to get blood from my arm (after many attempts).  My  lining is good, the follies are growing on each side.  Estrogen level is a little low so the doctor increased the bra.velle dosage.  Back tomorrow for the same drill.

So last night Steve had an appointment with some folks and when he returned home, he bought me a So.nic Blast to make up for pain he caused me and for laughing at me. He still can't say sorry about it without a straight face though.

(Just so you don't think my hubby is heartless, I know that deep down inside, he really doesn't like to inflict pain on me like that.  We both know that this isn't an easy journey, but we both have faith in it.)

What's a Little Pain For the End Result.

The US/BW appointment yesterday went as expected, normal routine.  The phlebotomist that is normally in our RE's office had a baby and is not returning to work (which I think is great for her!).  Not so great for me though.  She was so good at taking my blood and I was in and out of the office.  Well, her replacement isn't so good.  Last time she had to take it from my hand, which hurts like crazy! Yesterday, she could not find my veins in my arms at all so she said to just go ahead with my U/S and she'll try again afterwards.  Still no luck so she ended up taking it from my hand again.  Lovely.

I go back in tomorrow morning and possibly every day after that.  I keep hoping she will find a vein in the arm instead of the hand.  But if she doesn't, then what's a little pain for the end result right?

The shots still hurt and I'm still a baby about it, but I endure it.  I even tried icing the belly before the shot, but it still burns.  Again, what's a little pain for the end result right?

What do you do with gift cards from Starbucks when you don't drink coffee?  You get caramel apple cider instead. mmmm....mmmmm....good! I love it! Especially where there's a drive thru Starbucks.  Yeah, it sounds lazy, but when it's so frigid cold outside, it's nice not to have to get out of the car!

If you love socks, sign up for Sock It To Me Winter 2010 over at Kimberli's.  It sounds like fun.  I love warm fuzzy socks, especially the toe socks.

Burn Baby Burn

Last night was my first shot of the cycle (Bra.velle and Men.opur combined).  You would think I would be use to this by now, but for some reason, I was freaking out about getting the shot in the belly.  I kept saying, 'wait, I'm not ready yet.' Steve just wanted to get it over with.  Abbey asked me if I wanted to hold her hand through it.  She kept telling me it was going to be okay.  She was so sweet.

Steve finally stuck me with the needle and it hurt! I forgot how much it burns! What a fun couple of weeks we have in store.  I'm hoping the shots will hurt/burn less!

Today we just hung out around the house.  It's so frigid cold outside!  Abbey is still in her PJ's.  We cleaned, played Wii, watched movies and made beef stew.  It's nice to just be inside and have fun together.

I'm ready for Spring!!  Only two more months before we cruise!!

Cycling w/o AF?

AF hasn't showed up yet and I'm suppose to start my shots tonight.  I asked the nurse earlier this week about what to do if AF doesn't show up by today, do I still start the meds?  She said yes, it should be fine. I thought that was kind of strange, but hey, they're the experts.  So I POAS this morning, just to make sure (since I missed one day while on the pill). Yep, no miracle...it was a BFN.  Wishful thinking. Oh well, what's a wasted pee stick?  I'll just add it to my list next time I go shopping.

So, has anyone ever started an IVF cycle with a no show AF? I'm just wondering if it's 'normal.'

Cycle #2 is good to go

I haven't been stressed out from work since I left my Recruiter position (last year), but now it's getting a little stressful.  No where near as stressful as my last position (which I don't miss at all), so it's not too bad.  Add on top of that my family issues that I'm dealing with too.  Bless Steve's heart for having to deal with it too.  I'm trying to manage it all and not let it get to me too much.

My appt yesterday was fine.  Routine us/bw. We start the injections on Friday.  Last cycle we did Lupron, but this cycle the RE wants to use Ganirelix.  Everything else is pretty much the same.  We go in on Monday for another us/bw.

I plan on writing Aet.na and telling them about the marvelous Mary Beth.  Great people need to be recognized.  I am still counting my blessings.

Someone to Fight for You!

Returning to work after the holidays is always hard.  We surprisingly made it in to work earlier than usual 7:30 AM (it's been a long time since we've made it that early).  I knew I had to call Aet.na right away to re-enroll in their fertility program.  They didn't 'open' until 8 am. Everyone who's ever had to deal with insurance knows how frustrating it can be. You really need someone to be on your 'side' to fight for you.

I called Aetna right at 8AM and was on hold for 40 minutes!!  A live operator came on three times to tell me that all of their reps are busy and asked if I wanted to leave a message and they would call me back in 48 -72 hours!  I kindly explained to her, all three times, that no, I could not wait 48-72 hours as I have an appt. scheduled for tomorrow at 8 AM so I will patienly wait my turn in the queue.

Did I mention I waited 40 MINS??!!  (Thank goodness for speaker phone so I could keep working!)

It was FINALLY my turn in the queue and let me tell you, it was sooooo worth the wait.  Mary Beth was the best thing that has happened to me, YET, this year!  This woman was absolutely amazing.  She took the time to look up my old files and to make sure all my information was updated in the new enrollment form.  She even called me back to confirm once she consolidated my file!

After I got off the phone with Aet.na, I called AND emailed the RE's office to let them know that I had enrolled and that they should have no problem getting the pre-authorization.  When 4pm rolled around and I hadn't heard back, I called them back and all they told me was that they submitted all the paper work to Aetna and it's 'pending review' by them. And if I didn't have the authorization by my appointment tomorrow, they required me to pay for the entire cycle up front before I could even start! I asked them if I should try and call Aetna back and she told me that it might not do any good since they've already called in the info.

I was feeling quite discouraged and thought that it was wishful thinking on my part to think that I could get the authorization so close to my appt, let alone right at the beginning of the new year! But I had to keep trying.

I said a little prayer in my heart and called Aetna back.  This time I only waited 15 minutes before I got a live person. And the Lord truly heard my prayer because I got Mary Beth again!!  What are the chances of that?  Mary Beth even said that never happens!  She went way ABOVE and BEYOND her duties to help me.  She looked up my file, which was in the 'review bin' and she tracked down the department head, went to her manager too, and even stayed late to make sure that the nurse was able to review my file (it was after 5 pm).  She called me back and said that I got APPROVED!!!

I am so grateful for MaryBeth and her willingness to go out of her way to help me out.  She truly is a patient advocate! I could not thank her enough.  If it wasn't for her, I would still be in the 'Review Bin.' Her willingness to fight for me, truly was an answer to my prayer.  I knew the moment that I called back and got her again that it was a good sign.  I kept thanking her over and over and told her that hopefully I can call back after the cycle and enroll in their maternity program!

So, I am set for my appointment tomorrow morning.  The RE is doing things slightly different this cycle.  I haven't started my period yet, but they want me to come in tomorrow for ultrasound/bloodwork.  By the end of the week, AF should show up and I will start the meds.

I am hoping and praying that this cycle will be a success.  It's been quite a fight today to get the approval, and I know it's only the beginning.  (Sorry for the long lengthy post!)

First post of the new year!

Happy New Year!  I've been reading a lot of blogs where people are recapping 2009 and/or making resolutions for the new year.  Well, I'm not going to do either.  The past year just wasn't that exciting, but that doesn't mean that I am not grateful.  I am extremely grateful for all that the Lord has blessed us with.  I am reminded everyday that everything we have comes from Him.

I don't like to make resolutions because I feel like by February, most people have already broken their resolutions.  I just live each day and just try to find ways to better myself through love and service for those around me.

We spent New Year's Eve at home watching the Dick Cl.ark special on T.V.  We toasted with sparkling cider (we don't drink) and then called it a night around 1:30 AM.

We've been having fun with Abbey this weekend.  We all went bowling today, then went to my cousin's house for a birthday party.  Tomorrow we will be taking down the Christmas trees and decorations.

Abbey with her six pound bowling ball.

Steve celebrating after a strike!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! MAY THIS NEW YEAR BRING LOTS OF BLESSINGS TO YOU AND ALL THAT YOU STAND IN NEED OF.
